Ukraine wins Eurovision song contest with politically charged 1944 | TheNews Linzer

Singer Jamala calls for ‘peace and love’ after beating rivals with ballad about deportation of Crimean Tatars, seen as criticism of Russia’s actions in 2014 Ukraine has won the 2016 Eurovision song contest with an entry whose politically charged lyrics have caused tensions with neighbouring Russia. Singer-songwriter Jamala was crowned the winner for her haunting rendition of the ballad 1944, which evoked the deportation of Crimean Tatars by Josef Stalin and has been interpreted as a criticism of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. As she collected her trophy, she pleaded for “peace and love”.  Before the final, which was held in Stockholm on Saturday evening and seen by many as the most politicised edition of the competition to date, Jamala had said her victory would show that Europeans were “ready to hear about the pain of other people”. Jamala, whose real name is Susana Jamaladynova, is herself a Crimean Tatar who has not been home since shortly after Russia’s 2014 annexat...

Frozen fans urge Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend in sequel

Twitter campaign calls on producers to use Frozen 2 to reveal that blockbuster’s heroine is a lesbian Twitter users are calling for Disney to give its Frozen heroine Elsa a girlfriend in the blockbuster’s keenly anticipated sequel. The record-breaking and critically acclaimed 2013 animated film tells of Princess Elsa’s struggle to master her magical powers to reconnect with her sister Anna. Now Twitter users have called upon Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend in Frozen 2, which is currently in production. Alexis Isabel was the first to use the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend on Sunday, tagging the studio in her tweet. It has since been retweeted more than 1,500 times. Continue reading... Prince, superstar and pioneer of American music, dies aged 57

Purple Rain singer whose sprawling career spanned decades and genres dies at his Paisley Park recording studio in his home state of Minnesota The unique and endlessly creative artist Prince has died at his Paisley Park home, outside Minneapolis, aged 57, leaving behind him a gaping hole in musical genres as diverse as R&B, rock, funk and pop. The death was announced by his publicist Yvette Noel-Schure after police had been called to the premises which double as his music studio in the Minnesota city. No details were immediately given for the cause of death, though last week he was rushed to hospital apparently recovering from a bout of flu that had forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in Illinois. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's video is a terrifying insight into state mind control

Beware: don’t do anything to annoy the Australian government. You too may have to record an apology video as toe-curling and excruciating as this pair. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have taught us all a valuable lesson – declare everything when you enter Australia. Failure to notify the authorities that you’re bringing dogs into the country means there’s a good chance the government will kidnap your family and force you to record a grovelling apology while you watch a live-streamed video of them crying and begging for their lives.      I’ve seen the Depp and Heard apology video five times now, and that can be the only possible explanation. There is no universe, theoretical or otherwise, in which Depp and Heard are saying any of this stuff willingly. Something, clearly, must have happened to them.
